Anatomy of a visual message

The Primer of Visual Literacy was a really helpful and smart read. It helped me to understand the differences between the three ways that we express and receive visual images.
The article touched base on the three levels that we express visual messages:

Representationally, Abstractally, and symbolically.

Symbolically:

For abstraction for symbolism requires complete symplicity. A symbol in order for it to be effective it must recongnizable when seen, and it must be able to be reproduced. it cannot have a large deal of detail in it either. less is more in this case. and he also goes on to talk about the education of the public when regarding symbols. People have to know the backgrounds when it comes to spotting out symbols. If a person does not understand what the emblem is. They will not understand the meaning of why it is what it is. Symbols also must refer to a certain group, idea, or business...etc.

Abstractally:

Abstraction, does not have any relationship with symbol making. With abstaction we only need to see the basic visual elements. Which will lead the viewer to see the more significance of the understanding and structuring of the visual messages. I really like when Dondis says " Abstraction, visually is simplification toward a more intense and distilled meaning. " For me that really stuck out when abstraction was discussed, because when some people think of abstraction, like myself they think that alot of it has to be very dense, and it doesnot have a meaning to it. Which is not the case in all abstractions.

Reprosentationally:

Representational images are mostly images like photographs, which are most successful in recreating a picture, realistic drawings and paintings can also be representational, but can often lean towards becoming abstract. The actual meaning behind a representational image is just the image itself, and nothing more. The meaning is left for the viewer to decide, and for detailed paintings, drawings, and photographs their will be many different meanings from each viewer.

Last week we learned about the color wheel. We practiced on trying to figure out which colors went were on the Dondis color wheel. I still want to look at mine more closely so I haven't put my colors on just yet. But i am confident that i will figure it out asap.

Paula Scher

After watching scher speak about her living in New york and designing for her company, and basically thought the City i was really impressed on her background i really enjoyed her talking about how much she loved her city. I also liked how she said that "new york is never finished." I feel like I can relate to her with my city i love Kansas city. I also really love how much its grown and that It is also never finished. I really think that this video of her speaking on her work, and her city really relates to our project we just finished. I love how she talks about making banners and the scales of her large banners. I love that as well I really I as well as the rest of us took a lot of inspirations from scher's work, and passion.

Project Three: Final Statement

When this project first started off, in our groups I really didn’t understand why we were making different line studies and such, until we really started getting into it. I started to understand that it wasn’t just learning about different lines, for me I learned that the simplest composition can change just by tweaking it. It gives it a whole new look. I learned about lines from straight, angled, curved, horizontal, or vertical, they all move through space differently and they can make any composition seem as if it’s running on forever. It’s great to study the significance of lines, that’s all I do now ever since the star of this project with our photo safari I have just been seeing lines all about the city, I’m sure like all of the rest of my peers, I no longer see just buildings, roads, grass, trees, light poles stop signs, I see beautiful lines this project really gets a person looking into architecture, or the structure of objects and how they move along in space.

The focus on my book was the plaza and crossroads districts. I randomly chose them to be the main focus on my book it wasn’t planned. Aside from that this book gets into the alleyways, and takes a closer look at buildings, the close-up on store windows, the progression of a fence, and looking up into the sky all of the wiry cross-hatched power lines down in the heart of the city. I really tried to pair my photos with the best line studies my partners and I had came up with in the very beginning of this project. I wanted to give off a sense of fluidity for every juxtaposition. Some lines and objects flow the same directions pointing the same way. This book for me gives off two differences, kind of like ying and yang. There are parts of the book that shows off very nice elegant lines from buildings and structures to some of the gritty cross-hatches and dark deep places.

Going back to my original line studies, I used some manipulated photos that were used to get angles from the projector, and the scanner. With those I had to vector, and redo to help with getting the right juxtaposition to flow correctly. I would have to say that I lover learning new tactics on learning how to correct lines and purposely manipulate with your hands. I will definitely have to work on my curve practice.

The process in making this book was very challenging. Especially for someone that has a big issue with craft. I tried to be so careful when measuring and cutting every single piece; I really couldn’t help but take forever. I can’t tell you how many times I had to cut measure and re cut and only choose the best for my book. Like my juxtapositions I had a lot of refining and reworking to do but in the end I really think I cam out with something nice!

Color/Drawing/Form

There are a couple of Themes that I am thinking about doing;

Cosmetics: This is a definite theme I plan on using different textures from loose powder to mineral to gel, and liquid products to gain color. I plan on using original colors and even mixing some of my own, to create new colors.

Shoes: Is self explanatory, If i end up going this route i plan on doing both masculine and the femine route. I want to a range of shoes from the flats, to the athletic shoes and the high heel pumps.

Scarves: Again I will be playing with different textures, as well as different colors. their are hundreds and hundreds of beautiful colored and textured scarves out in the world that would work well for this project I think. I may take pics of people in them or maybe take them with out, or maybe even mix them all together.

Fruit: I also Have a loooooooove for fruit. This i think would be a great idea as well, so maybe switch either the shoe or scarf idea with fruit....their are so many beautiful shapes and colors within this category. As a matter of fact I think I might just switch out the shoes for fruit. I really think it would be a great idea compositional wise and just a great color study in general :)

Type Logo's

Here are the logo types i have been working on so far. I see more that i can do just by looking at what I have already done.

Title and prose/poetry...

Title Options:
  • Cross Roads into the Plaza
  • The Kansas City Jungle
  • Plaza to Crossroads
  • a Deeper meaning: the City called KC
  • Deep into the Meaning of Kansas City
  • Kansas City: Cross Roads to the Plaza
3 different selections:

  1. The highest spot in Kansas City, to the lowest part deep into the city. What you see is what you get deep into the heart of the Kansas City. The Plaza I call the sweet spot. Its fun its grand its great for any couple or any social day out. The creme of the crop only the best. Now if you're looking for more of an edgy side, if you want to feel as if you can be your own person, go through the alley ways and byways of the Cross Roads District. It separates the men from the boys. If you don't know what your doing one minute your walking down a two-way street, the next your in the middle of some back way alley standing under an abandoned apartments staircase, not a great look for the scary cats.
  2. Looking above to the cross-hatched power lines, back down to the stomach of Kansas City streets. Can be sweet, or be scary. Back alley ways, abandoned apartments on 19th street, just over, or cross over unto the sweet side of the plaza life. Park around the angled bars in the fenced garage or just walk around tall buildings, grand arches, beautiful lines and curves, the store window reflections of nice and tidy, with just a dash of attitude makes for the perfect romantic outing with a friend or two.
3.Kansas City, is not just a city,
its old it's new, its a retirement,
a retreat for some to getaway.
It becomes ones home from the streets,
its so cozy, yet so dangerous,
it can be a thrill ride...or for some,
it can be a joy ride, a life to live,
a place to run off too after a life's work.
Kansas City...is...

GROUP CRIT

I talked to Sara, Brandon, ray, and Joseph

When talking about my compostitions overall the decision was...overall my juxtopostitons were getting to the main point, but I should strive for even more improvment. So After getting opinions, I found that focusing in on the little overlooked problems would make for better compostions, ie; We even talked about the first nine that I improved. In a couple of them still needs more improvements...For instance in a couple of my more complex studies, as far as powerlines go I may need to retake some pictures, and edit more of them. In some of my photos my contrast is either too high or too low. I plan on going back in on some of my images and fixing that with the bright and contrast tool and maybe play with the Threshold and see where that takes me. Also I was told that I could still try cropping some of my pictures more. and focusing on the main points in the photos. So I plan on going back to look at which places I was told to focus on in my images as well as my line studies. I also will work on my tracings. I still have this slight wobble when I try and draw curves free hand so my teammates and I decided that I should still work on that excercise as well, even with using my ruler, I still need to work on alignment, especially with my diagnals. I really think that I have some promising juxtopostions...With a little more improvement and working with more of broader thought process I believe that maybe next time when we criq. It will work for me in my favor.
